生理学研究发现,能说两种或以上语言对认知过程来说是极好的资源。双语者的大脑与单语者的操作不同,这些差异提供了一些心智上的好处。以下是学习外语的五个认知优势。

Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process. The brains of bilingual people operate differently than monolingual speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits. Below are five cognitive advantages to learning a foreign language.

1

你变得更聪明

You become smarter

讲外语会迫使你的大脑去识别、调整语义,并且在不同的语言系统中交流,以此提升大脑的功能。在标准化考试中,学习外语的学生比单语的同学成绩好,尤其是在数学、阅读和词汇方面。

Speaking a foreign language improves the functionality of your brain by challenging it to recognize, negotiate meaning, and communicate in different language systems. Students who study foreign languages tend to score better on standardized tests than their monolingual peers, particularly in the categories of mathematics, reading, and vocabulary.

2

你变得更敏锐

You become more perceptive

西班牙的庞佩乌法布拉大学透露,懂多种语言的人都在专注相关信息和排除无关信息方面较熟练。他们也更善于发现误导性的信息。

A study from Spain’s University of Pompeu Fabra revealed that multilingual people are more adept at focusing on relevant information and editing out the irrelevant. They’re also better at spotting misleading information.

3

你变得更有创造力

You become more creative

当面对陌生的词或短语,为了有效地交流便无可避免地运用到创作能力。你越是锻炼你的创造力“肌肉”,你的创造力就越强。

When one is faced with unfamiliar words or phrases, it inevitably requires creativity in order to communicate effectively. The more you exercise your creative “muscle”, the better your creativity skill becomes.

4

记忆技能得到更好的保护

Memory skills are better protected

在卢森堡进行的一项研究发现,说两种以上语言的人患阿尔茨海默病和痴呆等记忆障碍的风险较低。而且这益处似乎是复合的,因为证据显示那些流利四种或以上语言的人,患病风险是最低的。

A study conducted in Luxembourg found those who speak more than two languages might be at lower risk of onset memory problems like Alzheimer's and dementia. And the benefit appears to be a compounding one, as the risk proved lowest in those fluent in four or more languages.

5

在外语中决策更简单

Decision-making is simpler in a foreign language

芝加哥大学的研究人员发现,当使用外语来衡量一个决策时,我们能够更理性地思考,并且带更少的偏见。令人惊讶的是,外语的框架效应也降低了损失厌恶的影响。他们把这些效果归功于外语在评估决策中的风险时更大限度地远离情感因素。

Researchers at the University of Chicago found that we are able to think more rationally, and with less bias, when we use a foreign tongue to weigh the options of a decision. Surprisingly, foreign language framing also reduces loss aversion. They attributed these effects to the fact that a foreign language permits greater emotional distance when evaluating what's at risk in the decision.
